Six Tips to Make Your Tires Last Longer

Well-maintained tires keep you safe on the road, last longer, and increase the fuel efficiency of your vehicle. Here are a few tips to keep them in mint condition.

Always Keep Your Tires Inflated

It’s important to check the air pressure in your tires before you drive. If your tire is over or underinflated, you risk being unable to accelerate, steer, or brake properly. Under-inflated tires also increase fuel consumption and shorten your tires’ lifespan. If you’re not entirely sure what your tire pressure should be, refer to your vehicle’s owner manual or check the vehicular information sticker near the driver’s seat.

Get a Wheel Alignment

Driving over potholes, dirt roads, or railroad crossings may jostle your wheels and cause your tires to get out of alignment. Experts advise that you check your wheel alignment every year. This helps avoid uneven tread wear and keeps your tires in good condition.

Have Your Tires Balanced

You want to avoid premature tread wear and having your tires balanced when you rotate them helps you do this. It also keeps you safe on the road.

Keep Inspecting Your Tires

Get into the habit of checking your tires for cracks, unusual bulges, or small objects and stones lodged in the rubber. Frequent inspection can also catch uneven tread wear early.

Get a Tire Change when The Weather Changes

Driving conditions largely depend on the weather, so if you live in a place with harsh winters, it’s a good idea to have a set of summer and winter tires. If you live in a place with a moderate climate, buy all-season tires, which are designed to perform well in both summer and winter driving conditions. Switching your tires out according to the season will provide better tread wear, offer grip and traction in cold weather, and provide better performance and speed on dry roads during the summer.

Store Spare Tires Correctly

Your spares should be clean and grease-free. If you store them indoors, make sure they’re in a cool, dry place and keep them away from direct sunlight. If you store them outdoors, use a waterproof cover to keep them moisture-free.
